Black Legion Chaos Lord finished!

Bad weather meant no outside activities, so I was able to finish up work on my Black Legion Chaos Lord yesterday. That completes half my vow for the Call of Chaos challenge. I’m very pleased with how he turned out:

I, of course, went for the Goblin Green base trim. Though I did actually paint the ballast on the base and add highlights. I figure, even if I don’t ever go back and paint up the bases on my other Black Legion units, it’s fine for this guy’s base to stand out as he’s a headquarters unit. And, he’s already got the larger base.

Quick update: Chaos Lord

I’m making progress on my Call of Chaos vow. My Black Legion Chaos Lord is getting near the finish line, and I’m pleased with how he’s turning out.

“Almost there….”

The Dark Vengeance model has some pretty intricate detail. At the same time, so of the details are fused to other parts of the model in weird ways. For example, the claws on the pelt draped over his back. Other models in the Dark Vengeance set have similar issues, where one piece is connected to another completely different piece (again, e.g., the plasma gun of the biker fused to the shoulder guard). That said, it has been a challenge to decide how to tackle some of the details. I took inspiration from the GW pictures of the studio Kranon model. But other details, I tried my own color scheme.

Starting another painting challenge – two CSM HQ units

I suppose I’m a glutton for punishment, but I’ve entered this year’s Call of Chaos over at the Bolter & Chainsword. This will be the third CoC I’ve entered, with my previous two ending in failures. Third time’s the charm, right? This time, though, I’ve taken on a much smaller vow; two HQ units: a Chaos Lord and a Chaos Sorcerer.

“The true power is here….”

So basically, two small models. Yes they are more detailed than other line troops for Chaos, but that should mean I’ll get them done within the time frame of the challenge. The Chaos Lord model is from the Dark Vengeance set. I modified him slightly by giving him a bolt pistol. The other is one of the older metal Sorcerer models. I really wish Games Workshop would come out with a multiple option, plastic, power armor Sorcerer kit. I’d think such a kit would sell well, especially given the number of formations in which Chaos Space Marines players can include a Sorcerer. But I digress. I have actually made some headway on the Chaos Lord.

Finishing a neglected unit: Plaguebearers of Nurgle

I’m one of those folks who have more miniatures boxes than they have time to assemble. Time for hobbying is scant, unfortunately, but I always end up getting that next unit before I’m finished with my backlog. In some cases, this has led to the neglect of units for years. And it’s not just assembling them; many a time I’ve left a unit in some intermediate stage of painting for months, or even years. Such is the case with these Plaguebearers of Nurgle.

This unit was purchased not too long after GW brought out the five-model box of Plaguebearers, as I needed them for what I was sure to be a Daemon army. As such, I wanted them to be in the same style as my other Nurgle stuff, so I was planning to use the dip method. It was a great way to buzz through line troops when you were putting together an army. However, the models instead did a lot of extended sitting. First these guys sat with a primer coat. Then they sat for a time with just basecoats. Eventually, I got around to dipping them, and then they sat again. Finally, this past weekend, I put on a dry-brush layer of highlight and did basing, and now they are finished.

Review: Eccentric Miniatures 25mm-to-32mm base adapters

Raptors with adapters
Old Chaos Raptors with base adapters added

With the ongoing shift in base sizes for Warhammer 40,000 armies in power armor, those of us with older armies face a bit of a dilemma; do we pull our marine models off their old 25mm bases and glue them on new 32mm bases, or do we continue to play with models with the smaller bases, even as we add new models with the new, larger base size? And what of older, metal models in our collection that went into slotted bases. You can’t just rip them off the old base and glue them to a new base. Well, not easily at any rate.
