First Dark Angels pass the finish line

It’s been a couple weeks. I’ve kept my Dark Angels moving through the painting process and now I have a full group of them painted, as well as the company commander. Well, I am missing the appropriate sergeant, but more on him later. As it stands, I have nine Dark Angels done and the company commander. I was able to get the proper paint color for doing the highlighting. I still ended up with a Tron-like effect, but it’s much more muted.

One thing I need to work on is the edge highlighting technique. The lines on these minis are a bit inconsistent in the width. I think I’m also going to scale back the number of edges I highlight from “darn near everything” to a more reasonable level. Looking back over the minis and thinking about it, probably not every line I did needed to have a highlight. Still, it looks pretty good from a table-top eye view – as in the distance your eye normally would be over them minis if you were playing a game.

WIP Wednesday: Dark Angels tactical squad

I’ve done a little more work on my Dark Angels. Going back over the greens, reds, and tans after doing the shading took a lot longer than I thought. I finally got it done a couple days ago and now have started the highlighting work. So far, I’ve only done the squad markings, boltgun casings, and the purity seal wax.

That’s because I started doing the green armor highlight only to realize I had the wrong color green for it. You can see this on the far left Dark Angel marine in the picture. I’ve been using the Vallejo Game Color paint for the armor, and instead of using Sick Green as the first highlight, I used Goblin Green.

Painting update: Darker Dark Angels

I’ve had to divide my free time over the last week between reading up on 8th edition and doing a little painting. I got the new Dark Imperium starter box, and I’ve enjoyed going through the contents. I’ll post up my thoughts on int at a later date. Even with the excitement of the new edition, I’ve tried not to neglect my painting.

Work continues on my Dark Angels. I finished up the last of the base coat details on the squad and the company master. I then applied some shade in the form of Nuln Oil. The squad is now a bit darker than it was and I think the shade has really helped define all the details on these Dark Angel models.

Death Guard reinforcements incoming – and the advent of 8th edition.

It seems that just about every blog out there involving Warhammer 40,000 has had something to say about the release of 8th edition. I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Since the release is just a few hours away, now seems like the perfect time for a procrastinator like me to say something. Here are a few quick thoughts.

First off, as someone who’s been a long-time Death Guard player and collector (since 3rd edition), the fact that the new starter box includes them has me giddy! While I’m probably one of the few players on the planet who still likes the old Death Guard models, I’m pleased to see the supplicants of Father Nurgle get an update. I haven’t seen anything confirmed yet, but it looks like from some of the teaser videos that a Death Guard Plague Marine multi-part kit is also on the horizon. So, looks like GW won’t pull another Dark Vengeance with the CSM faction and leave the starter box models as exclusive to the set.

Second from what I’ve seen, I like most of the rules for the Death Guard. I’m glad the kept a Feel-No-Pain type rule that’s even a little more useful than it was in 7th edition. I like that my Forge World Death Guard dreadnought… err… Helbrute and Chaos Land Raider will be officially Death Guard units again. I like that the army is getting a few new specific units like the Pox Walkers, the Bloat Drone, and the Plague caster.  It’s also pretty cool that the troops can take up to three plasma guns in a squad, thanks to the new load-out available to the Plague Marine champion.

Progressing with Dark Angels

The past week involved a vacation away from home, but I was able to take my Dark Angels and some paints. I carved out some time to work on them in the evenings. Progress was slow, but steady. As such, I was able to get nearly all the models base-coated. Here’s how they stand now:

I’m using many of the same paints Duncan Rhodes suggests in his tutorials. I want to use his basic scheme, and then build on it with highlights and detailing. I think I’ll be able to come away with something good, and I might generate some ideas for experiments as I’m building this Dark Angels army. That said, here are the differences between what I’m doing and the tutorial videos.
